Somvati Amavasya Vrat Katha Pooja Vidhi Overview
Somvati Amavasya is considered to have special significance in Hinduism. Amavasya falling on Monday is called Somvati Amavasya. This year Somavati Amavasya will be celebrated on 31 January 2022. On the day of Somvati Amavasya, women keep a fast for the long life of their children and spouse. In which she worships Peepal tree. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides in the root of the Peepal tree, Brahma in the front and Lord Shiva in the trunk. Due to which women worship Peepal tree on the day of Somvati Amavasya. And this fast (Somavati Amavasya Vrat) can be observed by any person.
Story of Somvati Amavasya:
There was a poor Brahmin family, in which apart from husband and wife, there was also a daughter. The daughter started growing up slowly. All the feminine qualities were developing in that girl with time. The girl was also beautiful, cultured and virtuous, but due to being poor, she could not get married. One day a monk came to the Brahmin’s house, who was very pleased with the service of the girl. Giving blessings of long life to the girl, the monk said that there is no marriageable line in the palm of the girl. The Brahmin couple asked the monk for a solution, what should the girl do so that marriage becomes possible in her hands.
After thinking for some time, the sage meditated from his insight and told that at some distance in a village, a woman of Dhubi caste named Sona lives with her son and daughter-in-law, who is very virtuous and virtuous and husband. He is devoted. If this girl serves him and that woman puts vermilion of her own demand in her marriage, and after that this girl gets married, then this girl’s widowhood can be destroyed. The sage also told that the woman does not come and go anywhere. Hearing this, the Brahmin asked his daughter to serve the washerman.
The girl would get up early in the morning, go to the gold washerman’s house, clean and do everything else and return to her home. Sona Dhobin asks her daughter-in-law that you wake up early in the morning and do all the work and it is not even known. The daughter-in-law said that mother, I thought that you wake up in the morning and finish all the work yourself. I get up late. On this, both mother-in-law and daughter-in-law started monitoring that who is the one who used to do all the household work early in the morning.
After many days, the washerman noticed that one by one the girls come to the dark house and leave after doing all the work. When she started leaving, Sona Dhobin fell at her feet, asking who are you and why do you work in my house secretly like this. Then the girl told all the things said by the monk. Sona the washerwoman was devoted to her husband, she was sharp.
She got ready. Sona Dhobin’s husband was a little unwell. In it, he asked his daughter-in-law to stay at home till his return. As soon as Sona Dhobin put the vermilion of her demand on the demand of the girl, her husband went away. He came to know about this. She had left the house without water, thinking that if she finds a Peepal tree somewhere on the way, she will take water only by giving it a whirlpool and circumambulating it. That day was Somvati Amavasya. Instead of the pue-dish found in the house of a Brahmin, he whirled 108 times with pieces of brick and circumambulated the Peepal tree 108 times and then took water. As soon as she did this, her husband’s dead body started trembling.
Puja Vidhi:
- Married women fast on Somvati Amavasya for the long life of their husbands.
- It is also called Ashwath (Peepal) Pradakshina Vrat.
- On this day, wake up early in the morning and do your daily rituals and bathe and wear clean clothes.
- Now take all the worship material and go to the Peepal tree.
- Offer milk/water after establishing Lakshmi Narayan in the root of Peepal tree.
- Wrap a thread around the root of Peepal tree and meditate on God and offer flowers, Akshat, sandalwood, bhog, incense etc.
- Then pray to God with folded hands lovingly. Now circumambulate 108 times around the tree saying “Om Shri Vasudevaya Namah”.
- After this listen or narrate the story.
- Donate according to your ability.
- By doing this, God bestows sons, grandsons, wealth, grains and all desired fruits.
- Note – Do not touch radish and cotton on this day.
