Kuvempu Biography Overview
Kuvempu’s full name is Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa. Kuvempu was his pen name. He is one of the most popular and talented Indian poets, playwrights, novelists and critics.
He was born on December 29, 1904 at Hirekodige, Koppada, Chikmagalur, Mysore Kingdom. Mysore is now known as Karnataka. He died at the age of 89 on November 11, 1994 in Mysore, Karnataka, India.
He wrote mostly about fiction and drama. He received many notable awards in his lifetime including Karnataka Ratna (1992), Padma Vibhushan (1988), Jnanpith Award (1967), Padma Bhushan (1958) and Sahitya Akademi Award (1955).
Childhood and education:
- Kuvempu was born in 1904 to his father Puttappa and mother Sitamma. His childhood was spent in Theerthahalli of Shimoga district.
- Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown and then pursued his higher education in Mysore.
- He did his BA and M from Mysore College. Received an A degree.
Career and married life:
- Kuvempu completed his MA from Mysore Maharaja College and started his career as a lecturer in the same college.
- Presided over the Kannada Literary Conferences, Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa, who had immense literary knowledge, served as the Principal of Maharaja College after his teaching career and later became the Chancellor.
- He married Hemavathi in 1937 and had four children in total, sons Purnachandra Tejaswi, Kokilodaya and daughters Indukala and Tarini.
Kuvempu’s Literary Service:
- Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa was the greatest poet of the twentieth century. Kuvempu is a great person that Kannadigas will always remember.
- He composed several poetry, drama, epic philosophical and critical works as listed below.
Kuvempu’s monument in Kuppali style of poetry:
- Kuvempu’s childhood home at Kuppali has been converted into a museum by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Prathishthan (a trust dedicated to Kuvempu). The trust has undertaken immense development work in Kuppali to showcase Kuvempu and his works to the outside world.
- On the night of 23 November 2015, many valuables including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awarded to poet Kuvempu were stolen from Kavimane.
- The entire museum was destroyed. The surveillance cameras there were also damaged. The Jnanpeeth award kept there remains intact.
Poetic style
A gradually rising hill to the south of the house is named Kavishaila, Kuvempu’s mortal remains are kept in Kavishaila.
Literary cultivation
- Kuvempu was the greatest genius of the 20th century. He is a sage. In his masterpiece ‘Sri Ramayana Darshanam’, he has given the vision needed for this era.
- His two magnum opus ‘Kanuru Heggadati’ and ‘Maleilei Madumalu’ have made him stand among the great novelists of the world.
- There is a touch of rationalism in his plays.
Death
- Kuvempu died on November 11, 1994 in Mysore.
- His last rites were performed at Hattur Kuppali. His tomb at Kuppali is a memorial.
