Overview of Fundamentals of Multimedia
Multimedia has become a means of entertainment in today’s time. Multimedia refers to interactive cable TV with hundreds of digital channels or a cable-TV-like service delivered over a high-speed Internet connection. DVDs, games, digital TV, set-top web surfing, wireless, and so on are all converging in technology to possibly arrive at an all-round, multimedia-capable product in the future.
In all these, graphics, visualization, HCI, computer vision, data compression, graph theory, networking and database systems, etc. have a very important contribution in the field of multimedia at present. There is a difference between multimedia and media, as media display only printed text or hand produced traditional form.
In simple words, multimedia means “more than one medium.” In other words, television programs, movies, even illustrated books are all examples of multimedia – they all use text images, sound and movement.
Key Points:
- The words multi and media are combined to form the word multimedia. The word multi refers to “many”. Multimedia is a type of medium that allows information to be easily transferred from one place to another.

- ultimedia can be recorded and played, interacted with or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but are also part of a live performance.
What are multimedia?
Multimedia is media that uses multiple formats of content material and information processing (such as text, audio, graphics, animation, video, interactivity) to inform or entertain users. Multimedia also refers to the use of electronic media to store and experience multimedia content.
Similar to traditional mixed media in multimedia fine art, but with a wider scope. The term “rich media” is synonymous with interactive multimedia. Multimedia refers to the transfer of computer information to traditional media (i.e., text, graphics).
Types of Multimedia
Depending on your definition of multimedia, there could be anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of unique types of multimedia. The term “multimedia” originated in the art world as a way of describing artwork that uses several different media, such as collage, video, or music.
Its meaning became more general, and now refers to any information content, including text, pictures, animation, video, audio, and interactivity.
Some of these types of multimedia are as follows
Multimedia on Television:
Perhaps the most common place to view multimedia is your television screen. Television segments combine animation, words, and video to present their message. Often, television programs contain multimedia graphics and animation. People who create this type of multimedia are called broadcast designers.
Multimedia Websites:
Websites are another major place where multimedia is used. For example, a news site offers written articles that describe the events of the day.
This may include slide shows, audio clips of speeches or news broadcasts, video coverage of major events, and animation that illustrates news topics. Multimedia web designers organize and present multimedia content on their sites.
Multimedia Information Kiosk:
Another form of multimedia often seen in places such as malls, airports, and stores is in the form of information kiosks. Today kiosks are fully automated and interactive.
How many components are there in multimedia?
The different components of multimedia are text, audio, graphics, video and animation. All these components work together to represent information in an effective and easy way.
1) Text:
Text is the most common means of representing information. In multimedia, text is mostly used for titles, headings, menus, etc.
