Overview of Mauni Amavasya Vrat Katha
Amavasya Tithi is considered very important in Hindu religious beliefs. Amavasya Tithi is considered most suitable for religious rituals like Pooja-Archana, Japa-Tapa, Havan-Yagya etc.
In order to please our ancestors quickly, they should be worshiped and offered on the new moon day of every month. If there is any kind of Petri Dish in the horoscope of a person and because of this different types of problems are arising in your life, then you must observe the fast on Amavasya Tithi.
Story of Mauni Amavasya:
According to legend, a Brahmin used to live in Kanchipuri with his wife Dhanavati, seven sons and daughter Gunavati. The name of that Brahmin was Devaswami. Devaswami’s seven sons were married but his daughter was still a virgin. He entrusted his elder son with the task of finding the boy. One day a pundit saw Gunavathi’s horoscope and told that Gunavathi would become a widow due to a defect in Devaswami’s horoscope. Everyone started asking that pundit the solution to deal with this problem.
Explaining the solution to this problem, the pundit said that a washerwoman named Soma lives in Sinhal Island, bring her here, her worship has so much power that she will save Gunavati from becoming a widow. At the behest of the pundit, Devaswami’s younger son and Gunavati went to fetch Soma. After crossing the ocean on the way, they got tired and found a tree. They both started resting under that tree. There was also a vulture’s nest on that tree. There were vultures in that nest who were listening to the words of Gunavati and her brother.
When the vulture tried to feed his children, those children refused to eat food and said that first help these humans, only then we will eat. Following the insistence of his children, the vulture left Gunavati and her brother in the singhal where Soma’s house was. Now both the brothers and sisters kept thinking of ways to please Soma. Every morning both brothers and sisters used to clean Soma’s house and do lipa-granddaughter.
Soma asked her daughters-in-law about this but her daughters-in-law lied to her that she does this cleaning. Soma was smart, she woke up early the next morning and caught Gunavati and her brother cleaning. She was very happy with the work of both and agreed to go with both of them to their village. While leaving, Soma told her daughters-in-law that if someone dies, then his body is not to be burnt and to wait till she comes. When Soma reached Gunavati’s village, Gunavati’s marriage was to take place the next day.
The next day after Saptapadi, Gunavati’s husband died. Soma immediately started worshiping Lord Vishnu and after worshiping went round the Peepal tree 108 times. As soon as this remedy was taken, Gunavati’s husband came back to life. When Soma returned home, she came to know that her son Jamata and her husband were dead. Soma did exactly what he had done at Gunavati’s wedding. After worshiping Lord Vishnu, she started circumambulating the Peepal tree 108 times. By doing this both her husband and son were alive.
Benefits:
- On the day of Mauni Amavasya, one should get up in the Brahma Muhurt and take a bath in the Ganges or other holy rivers after retiring from daily activities.
- After taking bath, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped according to the method.
- Offer yellow flowers, saffron, ghee, lamp and sandalwood to Lord Vishnu while worshiping.
- Vishnu Chalisa or Vishnu Sahasranama should be recited on this day.
- Donating to Brahmins on the day of Mauni Amavasya gives special results.
- Donate to the needy on Mauni Amavasya and worship Lord Vishnu in the evening.
