Dr. Rajendra Prasad ji has dedicated his invaluable services to the country as the first President of India. He was a skilled politician and a brave freedom fighter. Dr. Rajendra Prasad ji was born on 3 December 1884 at a place called Saran district (now Siwan) of Bihar state of India.
Along with playing an important role in the independence of the country, Dr. Rajendra Prasad had also made an important contribution in the making of the Indian Constitution. In 1946 and 1947, under the first cabinet of India, the responsibility of Agriculture and Food Minister was also performed efficiently. His loved ones fondly called him by the name of ‘Rajendra Babu’.

Rajendra Prasad as the first President
- When India became a republic on January 26, 1950, he was made the first President of India.
- After the formation of the new government in the year 1952, he was re-elected to this post.
- In the year 1957 also, he got Vijayashree in the presidential election. While holding the post of President, he also traveled to many countries. He is the only President of India to serve two consecutive terms.
- He held the highest office of the country till May 14, 1962.
- After this, due to ill-health, he retired from his post and went to live in Sadakat Ashram in Patna.
- In the same year, the Government of India decorated him with the country’s highest honor ‘Bharat Ratna’.
- Rajendra Prasad continued to follow the ideas of Gandhiji throughout his life, but when China attacked India in the year 1962, despite being unwell, he became eager to awaken the self-respect of the public and left his sick bed and gave a powerful speech at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. He said- “Be it non-violence or violence, we have to face the Chinese aggression.” This shows his unique sense of patriotism.
Literary interest of Dr. Rajendra Prasad
- Apart from his ‘Autobiography’ (1946), Dr. Rajendra Prasad also wrote many books, including ‘Bapu Ke Kadam Mein 1954’, ‘India Divided 1946’, ‘Satyagraha at Champaran 1922’, ‘Gandhiji’s Gift’, ‘Indian Culture And ‘Economics of Khadi’, ‘Mahatma Gandhi and Bihar’ etc. are remarkable. Although Rajendra Babu was educated in Persian and Urdu, he took Hindi only in BA.
- He was fully conversant with English, Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Bengali language and literature and also had practical knowledge of Gujarati language. For the ML exam, he had studied Hindu law from Sanskrit texts only.
- He had immense love for Hindi.
- His articles were published in Hindi newspapers and magazines, such as ‘Bharat Mitra’, ‘Bhartoday’, ‘Kamala’ etc., which were elegant and effective. He also edited Hindi’s ‘Desh’ and English’s ‘Patna Law Weekly’ newspaper.
- In the year 1926, he was the chairman of the Bihar State Hindi Literature Conference and in the year 1927, the Uttar Pradesh Hindi Literature Conference.
- He was always striving for the development and spread of the national language Hindi and for this work he was associated with the All India Hindi Literature Conference for life.
- Despite living in the opulent environment of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Dr. Rajendra Prasad never allowed his simplicity and purity to be disturbed. Sarojini Naidu wrote about him- “His extraordinary genius, his unique sweetness of nature, his magnanimity of character and supreme sacrifice have perhaps endeared him more widely and personally than all our leaders.
Education of Dr. Rajendra Prasad
- At the age of 5, Prasad’s parents started sending him to a Maulvi, so that he could get knowledge of Persian, Urdu, Hindi.
- Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s early education took place in his own village Jiradei.
- He was inclined towards studies since childhood.
- Along with his brother Mahendra Pratap, he started attending TK Ghosh Academy in Patna.
- After this, he took the examination for admission to the University of Calcutta, in which he passed with a very good number, after which he started getting a scholarship of 30 rupees every month.
- For the first time a young man from his village had succeeded in getting admission in Calcutta University, which was certainly a matter of pride for Rajendra Prasad and his family.
- In 1902, Prasad joined the Presidency College, from where he graduated.
- He did his MA in Economics from the University of Calcutta in 1907.
- He completed his master’s degree in law in 1915, for which he was awarded the Gold Medal.
- After this, he also obtained a doctorate degree in law.
- After this, he came to Patna and started practicing law, due to which he got a lot of money and fame.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad in politics
- In Bihar, the British government had indigo fields, the government did not pay proper wages to its laborers.
- In 1917, Gandhiji came to Bihar and took the initiative to solve this problem.
- During the same time, Dr. Prasad met Gandhiji, he was greatly influenced by his ideology.
- In 1919, there was a wave of civil movement all over India.
- Gandhiji appealed to boycott all schools, government offices.
- After which Dr. Prasad left his job.
- Rajendra Prasad became a loyal companion of Gandhiji during the Champaran movement.
- After coming under the influence of Gandhiji, he abandoned his old and orthodox ideology and participated in the freedom movement with a new energy.
- Congress started the movement in 1931, during which Dr. Prasad had to go to jail several times.
- In 1934, he was made the President of the Bombay Congress, he was made the President more than once.
- He participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942, during which he was arrested and kept under house arrest.
