Overview of Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a powerful Hindu mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is chanted to seek protection and blessings from Lord Shiva, especially in times of illness, distress, or danger. The mantra is believed to have healing properties and is used in Ayurvedic medicine for its therapeutic effects. The mantra is “Om Tryambakam Yajamahe, Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan, Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat”. It is often chanted 108 times using a Rudraksha mala or a tulsi mala. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is deeply rooted in Hindu tradition and is widely revered for its ability to bestow blessings and protection.
Story of Mahamrityunjay
According to the legend found about the origin of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, once upon a time sage Mrikandu did severe penance to Lord Shiva to get a child. Pleased with the penance of his devotee, Lord Shiva gave a boon to sage Mrikandu to get a son according to his wish, but Lord Shiva told sage Mrikandu that this son would be short-lived.
After some time, Rishi Mrikandu was blessed with a son Ratna. After the birth of a son, the sages told that the age of this child would be only 16 years. On hearing this, sage Mrikandu was filled with sadness. Seeing her husband surrounded by anxiety, when Rishi Mrikandu’s wife asked him the reason for his sorrow, he told the whole story.
On this, his wife said that if Shiva ji is pleased, then he will avoid this law too. The sage named his son Markandeya and also gave him the Shiva mantra. Markandeya was always engrossed in devotion to Shiva. Time passed and Markandeya grew up.
When the time came near, sage Mrikandu told his son Markandeya about short life. Along with this, he said that if Shivji wants, he will postpone it. Then to remove the sorrow of his parents, Markandeya started worshiping Lord Shiva to get the boon of longevity from Lord Shiva.
Markandeya ji composed the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for the worship of Shiva and started chanting it continuously sitting in the Shiva temple. When Markandeya’s age was over, the Yamadoots came to take his life, but at that time Markandeya was engrossed in the penance of Lord Shiva. Seeing this, the Yamdoots went back to Yamraj and came back and told the whole thing.
Then Yamraj himself came to take Markandeya’s life. As soon as he put his noose on Markandeya to take his life, the child Markandeya hugged the Shivling. In such a situation, the noose accidentally fell on the Shivling. Shivji became very angry on Yamraj’s aggression and Lord Shiva appeared before Yamraj to protect his devotee, then Yamdev reminded him of the rule of law, but Shivji changed the law by giving Markandeya the boon of longevity.
In this way, Markandeya composed the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra while being engrossed in the devotion of Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva saved his life from Yamraj. This is the reason why the Mahamrityunjaya mantra is called the death averting mantra.
महामृत्युंजय मंत्र
।। ॐ ह्रौं जूं स: । ॐ भूर्भुव: स्व: ।।
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ।
ॐ स्व: भुव: भू: ॐ । स: जूं ह्रौं ॐ ।।
