Overview of Mahashivratri Vrat Katha
In ancient times, there lived a hunter named Gurudruha in a forest who used to hunt wild animals and feed his family. Once on the day of Shiv-ratri he went out for hunting, but incidentally the whole day Even after searching, he could not find any prey, he became worried about the fact that his children, wife and parents would have to starve, At sunset, he went near a water body and climbed a tree on the bank of a ghat to drink some water because he had full hope that some animal would definitely come here to quench his thirst. It was of ‘Bel leaves’ and under the same tree there was also a Shivling which was not visible due to being covered with dry Bel leaves.
Before the first watch of the night passed, a deer came there to drink water. On seeing her, the hunter shot an arrow on his bow. In doing so, a few leaves and a few drops of water fell on the Shivling below and unknowingly When the hunter heard the rustling of the leaves, she looked up in fear and said to the hunter in a trembling voice, ‘Don’t kill me.The hunter said that he and his family were hungry so he could not leave him. The deer promised that she would return after handing over her children to her master. Then he hunts him down. The hunter could not believe his words. He again made the hunter believe his words by saying that as the earth rests on the truth; The sea lives in dignity and water streams fall from the springs, similarly she is also speaking the truth.Despite being cruel, the hunter took pity on her and let the deer go, saying ‘come back soon’.
After a while, another deer came there to drink water, the hunter became alert, started shooting the arrow and while doing so, with the push of his hand again some water and some belpatra fell down on the Shivling as before and unintentionally killed the hunter. The worship of the second Prahar was also done. This deer also got scared, begged the hunter for life, but when he refused, the deer promised to return to him, saying that he knows that the one who turns back after giving his promise, will lose his life. The accumulated virtue gets destroyed. Like before, that hunter trusted the word of this deer and let him go.
Now he was worried that hardly any of those deer would come back and what would happen to his family. Meanwhile, he saw a deer coming towards the water, the hunter was very happy to see him Now once again, by putting an arrow on the bow, the worship of its third phase was automatically completed, but the deer became alert due to the sound of falling leaves. He looked at the hunter and asked – “What do you want to do?” He said – “I will kill you to give food to my family.” The deer became happy and said – “I am blessed that this body of mine will be of use to someone, my life will be successful through charity, but please let me go now so that I can hand over my children to their mother and take care of them all.” Be patient and come back here. The hunter’s heart had become pure after his sins had been destroyed, so he humbly said – ‘All those who came here, left after making all the talks and have not returned yet, if you also go away lying, then my family What will happen to? Now the deer assured him to speak his truth saying that if he does not come back; So he will get the sin that he commits, who does not help others even though he has the ability. The hunter also let him go saying ‘come back soon’.
As soon as the last watch of the night started, the hunter’s joy knew no bounds because he saw all those deer coming together with their young ones. As soon as he saw them, he put an arrow on his bow and like before, the worship of Lord Shiva was completed in his fourth prahar also. Now all the sins of that hunter were destroyed by the grace of Lord Shiva, so he started thinking – ‘Oh, blessed are these animals who, despite being ignorant, want to do charity with their bodies, but woe to my life that I am suffering from many types of misdeeds. Kept following the family. He stopped his arrow and told the deer that they were all blessed and let them go back. On his doing so, Lord Shankar was pleased and immediately made him see his divine form and gave him the boon of happiness and prosperity and gave him the name “Guh”. Friends, this was the Guha with whom Lord Shri Ram befriended.
