Overview of Chandraghanta Mata
The third day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Chandraghanta. On this day, the form of Mother Chandraghanta, the third power of Mother, is duly worshipped, and on this day the mind of the seeker enters the Manipur Chakra.
This form of Mata Chandraghanta is extremely peaceful and gracious. An hour-shaped half-moon adorns the forehead of Mata Chandraghanta, hence she is known as Chandraghanta Devi. If you also want to be blessed by the special grace of Mother and want to earn wisdom, knowledge and strength, then on the third day of Navratri, do worship Mother Chandraghanta with devotion.
Story of Chandraghanta Mata
Chandraghanta Mata is one of the nine forms of goddess Durga worshipped during Navratri. The name “Chandraghanta” means “one who has a half-moon shaped bell” and refers to the goddess’s appearance with a crescent moon on her forehead and a bell-shaped mark on her forehead.
There are different versions of the story associated with Chandraghanta Mata, but one of the popular ones goes as follows:
Once there was a powerful demon named Mahishasura, who had received a boon from Lord Brahma that made him invincible against all men and gods. He began to terrorize the world and even the gods in heaven were unable to defeat him.
The gods then approached goddess Durga for help and requested her to kill Mahishasura. Durga then took the form of Chandraghanta and rode on a tiger into the battlefield to fight the demon.
As the battle raged on, Mahishasura was unable to comprehend who this beautiful goddess was and tried to attack her. Chandraghanta then unleashed her fury on the demon, defeating him and freeing the world from his terror.
The story of Chandraghanta Mata highlights the goddess’s fierce and protective nature, as well as her role as a defender of the weak and oppressed. It is believed that worshipping her during Navratri can bring peace, prosperity, and protection to the devotees.
Mother Chandraghanta Puja Vidhi :
- First of all, after getting up early in the morning and taking bath, sprinkle Gangajal at the place of worship.
- Now meditate on Maa Chandraghanta Mata and light a lamp in front of her.
- Now offer Akshat, vermilion, flowers etc. to Mata Rani.
- After this, offer fruits and sweets to the mother as Prasad.
- Now perform the aarti of Maa Chandraghanta.
- At last take blessings from Mother Goddess.
