Overview of Durga Ashtami

Asuras had become very powerful on the earth and they began to ascend to heaven. They killed many gods and created havoc in heaven. The most powerful demon among them was Mahishasura. Then to end it, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma created Goddess Durga in the form of Shakti. Every god provided special weapons to Goddess Durga. After this Adishakti Durga came to the earth and killed the Asuras. Maa Durga fought with Mahishasura army and finally killed him. From that day the festival of Durga Ashtami started.

Story of Durga Ashtami

Durga Ashtami, also known as Maha Ashtami, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated on the eighth day of Navaratri. According to Hindu mythology, it marks the day when Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura.

Legend has it that the demon Mahishasura was granted a boon by Lord Brahma, which made him almost invincible. He began to wreak havoc on earth and the heavens, which prompted the gods to seek the help of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Brahma. The three gods combined their powers to create Goddess Durga, who was given weapons and a lion as her mount.

Goddess Durga then engaged in a fierce battle with Mahishasura that lasted nine days and nights. On the eighth day, which is now celebrated as Durga Ashtami, the goddess finally managed to defeat Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

During the festival, devotees perform elaborate rituals and offer prayers to the goddess. They also observe fasts and visit temples to seek blessings from the goddess. In many parts of India, the festival is celebrated with great fervor, with people dressing up in new clothes, organizing community events, and feasting on traditional delicacies.

Durga Ashtami Puja Vidhi

• Wake up in the morning on the day of Durga Ashtami, take a bath with Ganges water.
• Take a wooden text and spread a red cloth on it.
• Then chant the mantra of Maa Durga and install her idol or photo.
• Worship all the forms of Maa Durga with red or amaranth flowers, vermilion, Akshat, naivedya, vermilion, fruits, sweets etc.
• Then recite Durga Chalisa by lighting incense-lamps and don’t forget to do aarti as well.
• After this fold hands and place your wishes in front of them.
• By doing this one gets the desired result.
