Overview of Chaitra Purnima
Chaitra Purnima Vrat Katha is recited on the full moon day of Chaitra month. Panchang darshan is usually done in two ways in Hindu religion, one ends on full moon date and the other ends on new moon date. The Panchang which ends on Purnima is known as Purnimant and the one which ends on Amavasya is known as Aam anta Panchang.
Although the full moon date of any month is considered very important in Hindu religion, but Chaitra Purnima has its own special significance. On this occasion, by worshiping Lord Shri Hari Vishnu ji with complete rituals, severe problems in a person’s life can be averted. By the grace of Vishnu ji, there is never any shortage of money-grains in the house of the native.
Story of Chaitra Purnima
Chaitra Purnima Vrat Katha is a Hindu mythological story that is associated with the Chaitra Purnima Vrat, which is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Chaitra. According to the legend, there was a king named Muchukunda who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once, the gods approached the king for help in their battle against the demons. King Muchukunda agreed to help and fought bravely, but he became very tired after the battle and fell asleep. When he woke up, he saw a beautiful young man standing in front of him. The young man was actually Lord Vishnu who had come to bless the king for his bravery.
Lord Vishnu asked King Muchukunda to ask for a boon, and the king requested the lord to bless him with a long life. Lord Vishnu granted his wish and also told the king that he would wake up from his sleep only when he would see the Lord himself. The king then went into a deep sleep which lasted for many years.
Many years later, Lord Krishna arrived at the same place where King Muchukunda was sleeping. Lord Krishna wanted to end the king’s long sleep, so he asked the king to wake up. King Muchukunda woke up and was amazed to see Lord Krishna standing in front of him. Lord Krishna then explained to the king that he had been sleeping for many years and that many things had changed in the world since then.
On the day of Chaitra Purnima, people observe a fast and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that by observing this fast, people can get rid of their sins and attain salvation. The story of King Muchukunda and Lord Vishnu is recited on this day to remind people of the power and blessings of Lord Vishnu.
Puja Vidhi
- Worship Lord Satyanarayana According to Dharmasindhu Granth and Brahmavaivarta Purana, all kinds of sins are destroyed by taking pilgrimage bath, donation, fasting and worshiping Lord Sri Hari on the full moon date of Chaitra month.
- On this day, by worshiping Shri Hari and Goddess Lakshmi, unbroken Lakshmi is attained. On this day the moon with its sixteen arts shines in the sky with its unique shade and clean moonlight.
- Fasting on the full moon and reciting the story of Lord Satyanarayan brings wealth, wealth and prosperity.
- Hanuman Jayanti being celebrated on this day, Lord Rama’s devotee Hanuman is worshipped.
- From this day the bath of Vaishakh month also starts.
- Offering Arghya to the Sun at the time of sunrise and donating it bestows the blessings of the Gods.
