Overview of Bharat Ratna Award
The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India. It was instituted in 1954 to recognize exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavor. The award is conferred by the President of India and is given without any distinction of race, occupation, position or sex. It is not mandatory to award the Bharat Ratna every year, and the total number of awards cannot exceed three in a year. Recipients of the award receive a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The medallion is in the shape of a Peepal leaf, made of platinum and carries a replica of the Sun. The reverse side of the medallion contains the words “Bharat Ratna” inscribed in Devanagari script. Over the years, several prominent personalities from various fields like art, literature, science, social work, sports, public affairs, and politics have been awarded the Bharat Ratna.
